Letter from the Creative Director

Bonjour!

Our latest collection continues our season of celebrating of 25 years of all-things-French!

For this next chapter, our team looked to the beauty of France’s breathtaking gardens as inspiration.

We fell in love with the extraordinary life of 17th century French landscape architect, André Le Nôtre, and how he managed to revolutionise French garden culture with his most famous work, The Palace Gardens of Versailles.

Our latest line echoes the genius of ‘André Le Nôtre, in his love for art as well as flowers - culminating in a floral palette of olive, lilac and vivid chartreuse, set against pristine silhouettes and intricate, feminine detailing.

I hope you enjoy this collection as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

Bisous,

Some say love is like a flower.

In a garden, flowers need the sun to bloom. And so we begin our garden-inspired collection with our own lumière of sunshine: an elegant shirt-and-skirt ensemble in a bright shade of chartreuse, featuring scalloped edging and lace with matte gold buttons. As exquisite and accurate as landscape artist André Le Nôtre himself, you can pair this outfit with our Navy Suede Loafer or Abbey slingback. C’est si beau!

Our Favori French Things

Jardins à la Française

The Extraordinary Life Of André Le Nôtre (1613 – 1700)

Our ‘André Le Nôtre’ collection found its inspiration in France’s celebrated 17th century landscaper of the same name. Known as both the ‘king of gardeners’ as well as ‘gardener to the king’, André La Nôtre later emerged as the principal gardener of King Louis XIV of France at his Palace in Versailles. But what do we know about this man, and how he became the famous cultivator of his generation?

Born into the art of gardening

André Le Nôtre was born into the life of all-things gardening! He grew up in the Tuilieries, and learnt his landscaping knowledge at the Palais du Louvre, under the guise of architect François Mansart. He then trained under his father at the Tuileries gardens, until he took over as head gardener.

From gardener to master craftsman

From cultivating gardens for the King's brother, to designing a château garden for the Louis XIV's Superintendent of Finances, André Le Nôtre was appointed Controller-General of the Royal Buildings and in charge of all the royal gardens. Finally, he was summoned to Versailles in 1661 to work on the famous gardens of Versailles!

The Gardens of Versailles

The Gardens of Versailles, cultivated by André Le Nôtre himself, is one of the most magnificent gardens in the world! Located at the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, with its myriad of groves, gardens, statues, and fountains which cover some 800 hectares of land, these famous French gardens are a must-see, and at the top of our list for our favori French gardens.

Versailles, France

Monet’s Garden at Giverny

A stone’s throw from Paris, Monet’s famous gardens and house at Giverny are found at the edge of Normandy. This is one of our favourite French gardens, for good reason! We guarantee you’ll leave feeling completely inspired by this green haven, just as Claude himself was.

Giverny, France

The Gardens of Chateau Vaux-le-Vicompte

Another of André La Nôtre’s genius creations, the jardins at the Chateau Vaux-le-Vicompte are a must-see. Created prior to his work at Versailles, this garden displays breathtaking symmetry and harmony with the natural surrounds. If you get to the chance to visit, we promise you won’t regret going!

The Saint-André Abbey Gardens

With over 1000 plant varieties nestled amongst Roman remains, this jardin is truly unforgettable. Water lily ponds, climbing wisteria and fragrant roses make for an untamed and romantic Mediterranean sanctuary that is unparalleled in beauty.
