Letter from The Creative Director

Bonjour,
I am so pleased to share this latest collection with you! Bountiful in beauty, it has taken inspiration from the palette of Pierre Bonnard, the man who would become known as ‘The painter of happiness.’ His use of iridescent light and rich harmonies of colour set the stage for a romantic, sensual collection that offers elegance and functional protection from the elements. From luxurious knitwear to beautiful dresses, chic outerwear to earthy accessories, this season is about layering, to create forever-stylish silhouettes. With such a gorgeous base of colour, we knew there would be no better place to shoot the collection than Paris’s Musée de la Vie Romantique.

Keep reading, to learn the enchanting story of what was one the home and hub for Romantic artists, musicians, and writers alike. With its vivid history, we asked Amy Kupec Larue, who last year, took us through the luscious Jardins, to give us a tour of the exquisite historical site. I hope you enjoy, this incredibly special issue of our L’Édition.

 Avec amour,

The Musée De La Vie Romantique

Ever-so-romantique this must-see museum lies at the base of the Montmartre hill, in the 9th Arrondissement. A stone’s throw away from the Sacre Coeur Basilica, it’s one of only trois literary museums in Paris, and was originally the Paris home and studio of Dutch-born painter, Ary Scheffer, a prominent figure in Paris’s artistic and intellectual society.

A pink house with enchanting green shutters, this 1830’s-built hôtel particulier was to become an iconic literary and cultural salon, hosting some of the most renowned names in the creative world at the time. A tradition that would continue for many years, each Friday night Ary and his daughter hosted gatherings with attendants including George Sand, Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, Eugène Delacroix, and Charles Dickens (when he was in town).

This charming property remained under the ownership of Scheffer’s family for over 150 years as a private residence, until 1982, when it was then transformed into the Musée Renan-Scheffer, by the City of Paris. In 1987, the name of the museum was changed to Musée de la Vie Romantique, a far more accurate description of this poetic location.

Today this petit yet eclectic museum dedicates itself to preserving the works of the Romantics. Filled with Romantic paintings and gorgeous antique furniture, this whimsical salon will transport its visitors to the early 1800s. Truly one of the most romantique places in Paris, today, this artful venue celebrates the work of Ary Scheffer himself, the writer Ernest Renan and George Sand, one of the most successful female writers of all time.

When visiting, be sure to end your tour in the shaded, rose-filled garden. There stands the Rose Bakery, a fantastique way to enjoy a charming Parisian lunch after strolling through the museum.

Your Personal Tour

Join us for a private tour of the museum, as Amy Kupec-Larue, of Garden Guide Paris, tells us the extraordinary story behind the Musée de la Vie Romantique, and the artists it celebrates today.
